Dr. Deepti Lele is a trainer and consultant in Cyber Law. She is a Human Resource Management professional and has done a doctorate in "quality of work-life of police employees", MPM in Labour Laws, and LLB. She is also an author of noted research papers.

Dr. Deepti is very closely associated with many reputed schools, colleges, and organizations as a Passionate professor and trainer for the last 10 years. She has also given consultation related to cyber safety and security to the corporates from various business sectors. This inspired her to think about a training program for today's Netizens and help India to reduce cyberbullying and cyber fraud.

Need of the training “Responsible Netizens”:

Dr. Deepti Lele felt the need for this training because of the increasing number of users on the internet. In the “New Normal” of the pandemic for the last 2 years, the internet has become the most necessary for all.

From 1 year old to 80+ years old, the internet is an inevitable need of today’s digital world. With the term development, when a physical location is not the barrier with the evolution of technology, the internet is the default prerequisite. Statistics say that by the end of 2021, the number of internet users in India will reach 80 crores.

On 1’st July 2015, the Digital India project was begun by prime minister Mr. Narendra Modi. The project has many visions from taking mobile technology across villages to paying online bills and taxes.

The digit lock application is part of this project. We can protect our documents in the form of pdf or jpeg by using an Aadhar card on a server space created by the government. This information justifies that the number of internet users is going to increase day by day.

These days students are also taking online school, online classes, and other online platforms. Parents are working from home. We are also connected to the internet for entertainment, financial transactions, finding out some information, and so on.

We are using different e-wallets and mobiles apps in our everyday life. We are connected to our friends and family members on various social media platforms and social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Our lifestyle is incomplete without the internet. Kids are learning the use of the internet at a tender age. We are getting a lot of ease at our fingertips. At this age, we all are netizens in the world of the internet.

But the convenience of the internet comes at the risk of becoming a cyber victim if we do not handle the internet carefully and do not remain vigilant about possible internet frauds.

Takeaways of the training :

The training focuses on cyber ethics and cyber hygiene which if followed ensures safety and security norms for any internet user. The training also tells about the safe and responsible use of information and communication technologies, how to respect other fellow netizens, and the different purposes of the internet.

With evolving technology, there is great ease in the access of smartphones, tab, desktops, laptops, webcams, and other smart devices. But before we start using any gadget we must learn how to use it responsibly. What could be possible crimes we can become victims of through these gadgets. We must stay away from cybercrimes.

Respect fellow netizens :

● Ensuring the originality of news before we share it on social media platforms. Don't spread fake news.

● We must share true and helpful information

● We must inform the genuine and necessary information for the welfare of the society

● We must be kind towards other netizens

We should keep in mind the above points and stay away from cybercrimes and cyberbullying.

India is on number 3 and Maharashtra state is on the top in the country for cybercrimes. We must be vigilant and follow all the safety norms and educate our family to follow them. Even in the commercial organizations and educational sectors, cyber safety rules are of utmost importance.

Some IT companies have very strict IT security policies and whoever breaches the norms is given a warning and sometimes the person can end up losing the job. So employees should be well aware of the IT policies of their company.

Whenever we use the internet we create our digital footprint through our conversation and exchange of information. Through the topics of cyber crimes, cyber hygiene, cyber security posture rules, and regulations of the cyber world, we can become responsible citizens.

Responsible parents in today’s world involve being responsible netizens as well. When we expect our kids to reduce screen time. We as parents first follow it as we are the role models for our children.

We are going to learn how to use the websites safely, what care we must observe while online gaming, and how to maintain cyber hygiene. We will also get some information about the “Computer Emergency Response Team” and in case if you become the victim of any cybercrime how to file the complaint.

Information and examples of different cyber-crimes:

This is the most important part of the training to know the different possible threats and crimes in the cyber world.

● Paytm frauds

● ATM frauds

● Nigerian Frauds

● Phishing

● Identity Theft

● FB frauds

● Cyber Stalking

The above are the types of crimes which we should be aware of. If you understand these possible crimes and what measures can be taken to protect yourself and your family and your team against these crimes, you will lead the way to become a responsible netizen.

The training further educates you on recognizing the legacy and originality of the websites, possible cyber threats while accessing WhatsApp, email, social media. Password setting, firewall, router security, and anti-phishing software.

The next and the last important topic the training focuses on is cyber security posture.

Cyber security posture :

These are the rules for the employees of an organization. Most IT companies do have their team to ensure 24*7 support for IT security and the admin is very strict about their IT security norms. But few companies remain unaware of the possible frauds which can happen with them. Some know the theory but they don’t take it seriously and have to pay for it later.

Educating ourselves, our family, our fellow work colleagues, and employees about becoming responsible netizens is as important as educating them on online banking and various apps. If we all can do it, we can make our country safe from all the possible cybercrimes. So be aware, be vigilant, and be prepared to fulfill the duty of the “Responsible Netizen”.
